Pragmatics and Semantics
Many of the current philosophical approaches to pragmatics focus on semantics. For instance, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatic viewpoint).

What exactly is pragmatism?
Pragmatism is a viable alternative to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. It was developed by Charles Sanders Peirce. It was expanded by his friend and colleague William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It had a profound effect on areas of inquiry from philosophy of theology to philosophy of science, but also on ethics as well as philosophy of politics and language. The pragmatist tradition continues to develop.
The pragmatic maxim is at the center of classical pragmatics. It is a rule that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses via their 'practical implications', or their implications for the experience of specific situations. This leads to an epistemological perspective that is a form of 'inquiry-based epistemology', and an anti-Cartesian explication of the rules that govern inquiry. The earliest pragmatists, however largely split over the question of whether pragmatism should conceive of itself as a philosophy of science that adopts a monism about truth (following Peirce), or a broad-based alethic pluralism (James and Dewey).
A central issue for pragmatist philosophers is understanding knowledge. Some pragmatists, such as Rorty tend to be skeptical of any notion of knowledge based on the basis of 'instantaneous' experiences. Others, like Peirce and James, are sceptical of the correspondence theory of truth that holds that the most authentic beliefs are those that reflect reality in a 'correct' way.
Other topics in pragmatism are the relationship between beliefs and reality and the nature of human rationality, the importance of virtues and values, and the nature of life. Pragmatists also have developed a variety of ideas and methods, including those in semiotics and philosophy of language. They also study areas like philosophy of religion, philosophy and ethics, science and theology. Some, like Peirce or Royce are epistemological relativism, while others argue that this concept is a mistake. The latter half of the 20th century saw the resurgence of interest in classical pragmatics. This led to a myriad of new developments. This includes the concept of a "near-side" pragmatics that is focused on the resolution of ambiguity, indexicals, demonstratives and anaphors. There is also an "far-side" pragmatics which examines the semantics of discourses.

Semantics and Pragmatics can be viewed as being at opposite ends of the continuum. On the side that is near, semantics are seen as a concept, whereas pragmatics is located on the far side. Carston, for example claims that there are at most three general kinds of pragmatics in the present people who view it as a philosophical concept along the lines of Grice; those who focus on its interaction with grammar; and those who are concerned with the interpretation of utterances. Near-side pragmatics is believed include such issues as resolution of ambiguity and vagueness in reference to proper names, indexicals and demonstratives, anaphors, and presupposition. It is also believed to encompass some issues involving definite descriptions.

In recent years the neopragmatism movement been heavily focused on metaphilosophy as well as the philosophy of language. It has abandoned the value theories and metaphysics of classical pragmatism. However, some neopragmatists have been trying to create a metaethics based on the ideas of pragmatics from classical pragmatism and experiences.
Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and others were the first to introduce classical pragmatics. Both were influential thinkers who wrote many books. Their works are still widely thought of to this day.
While pragmatism is a viable alternative to the analytic and continental philosophical mainstream, it is not without its critics. For instance some philosophers have argued that pragmatism is just a form of deconstructionism and is not a new philosophical approach.
In addition to these critics, the pragmatism movement was shattered by technological and scientific developments. For instance, pragmatists struggled to reconcile their opinions on science with the development of evolutionary theory, which was developed by a non-pragmatist, Richard Dawkins.
Despite these challenges the pragmatism movement continues to grow in its popularity throughout the world.
